Mt. James on the left, Amphitheater on the right |
Goat w/baby (we saw quite a few goats from the summit) |
Our route to the top went left and up past goats (little white specks) then to the right of the upper snow patch, eventually to the final scramble of the summit block |

Scramble of Amphitheater Mountain with the Glacier Mountaineering Society. Twas a scorcher but there was ofttimes a gentle breeze that provided some respite.
After lunch, most of the group did a long side-hill traverse towards the peak instead of ascending to the ridge (Jim and Jeremy wisely ascended and found a great game trail on the ridgetop that the group took on the way back). J and J tagged the false summit as well and met up with the rest of us lollygaggers at the shoulder beneath Amphitheater.
Young Calin provided comic relief by periodically dropping and doing pushups during breaks to get in additional fitness training. Some folks are in too good shape!
Not a lot of water on this one and most ended up melting snow. Myself, I had 4 litres and ran out towards the end of the day on the descent and drank some water straight out of the stream. I had iodine tablets but decided just to take a chance (perhaps not wise, considering every time I dropped to the ground to tie up my shoes or take a break, I found i was sitting in elk poop). Oh well. So far no signs of giardia showing up.
13.5 hours car to car. James, Steve P. and myself drove down together from Lethbridge and the 3 of us hustled down at the end of the day to make sure we made the border in time (we got to the crossing around 10:15ish and were back home by 11:30). It was a long day consider we left town at 5:45 but another great day in the mountains.
